The mAT, or Monthly Automated Tournament, was introduced a few months after the end of the Celestial Tournament, in May 2007. Unlike previous tournaments, qualification is no longer based on a guild’s position on the leaderboard. Instead, teams must earn 20 qualifying points, which are obtained by placing in the top 8 of the Daily Automated Tournaments—from a maximum of 8 points for a first-place finish down to 1 point for finishing eighth.
The Monthly Automated Tournament is held once a month (on the last Saturday until November 2012, and on the third Saturday of the month thereafter). It uses a Swiss round system, with the number of rounds determined by the number of participants. The playoffs begin immediately after the Swiss rounds conclude.
